Foraging Tour of the Rockaway w/ "Wildman" Steve Brill

TIME: Saturday, November 8th, 10:00AM- 12:00PM
LOCATION: Firehouse 59- 5803 Rockaway Beach Blvd, Rockaway, NY (adjacent to Beach 60th St station- "A" Train- Far Rockaway only)

"Wildman" Steve Brill (America's Go to Guy for Foraging) will be joining us for a Foraging Tour of the Rockaways in which the "Wildman" will help us learn about the environment and get back in touch with nature. By studying foraging and nature, those who join us on this tour will learn to enjoy edible plants and reaffirm our commitment to preserving and rebuilding our ecological riches.

We hope you can join us for this FREE event! Advanced registration is suggested as space is limited.

4th Annual Hip Hop Halloween Celebration

TIME: Sunday, October 19, 2014,  1PM - 4PM
LOCATION: Hip Hop Community Garden/ Beach 59th St @ Rockaway Beach Boulevard

Join Rockaway Waterfront Alliance for the 4th Annual Hip Hop Halloween. Celebrate halloween with family and friends by taking part in painting a pumpkin, face painting and festive food. This event is free and open to the public. No registration required.


 

Storm Sandy Anniversary Planting

TIME: Sunday, October 19th, 10 AM- 12 noon

LOCATION: Firehouse 59 - Beach 59th Street & Rockaway Beach Blvd

For the two year anniversary of Storm Sandy, RWA is bringing people of all ages together to create a nature protective buffer for the Rockaway community.

 As we learned from the storm, the natural vegetation and dunes that exist off our shores served as a protective buffer to the homes and businesses that exist in these areas. Many of these dunes were compromised by the storm and need to be replenished to be effective.

Families and people of all ages are welcome to participate in this dune restoration project. Students can receive community service hours. No registration is required. This event is rain or shine, so please dress accordingly.

DOT Rockaway/Broad Channel Transit Workshop

DOT Jamaica Bay Greenway Community Workshops

The NYC Department of Transportation is hosting a community workshop to plan the future of the Jamaica Bay Greenway. Following a brief presentation, participants will have the opportunity to ask and answer questions about potential Greenway improvements in an interactive, small-group setting and discuss improved safety for all road users. Light refreshments provided.

Rockspot Bike Tour

TIME: Sunday, October 12th, 2014, 11Am-1PM 

DEPARTURE LOCATION: Firehouse 59 at 5803 Rockaway Beach Blvd, Rockaway, NY

The Rockspot Bike Tours are interactive tours that allows participants to explore select sites of environmental and historical significance along the Rockaway Peninsula.

Join us for a bike tour to the east end of the Rockaways. We will travel through Arverne East to explore the natural vegetation and protective dune barrier growing along the eastern end of the Rockaway Peninsula.

Adults and families are welcome to join this tour. A limited number of bikes are available for loan. Registration is suggested.

Come get your free tree Sunday October 12th at the NYRP Tree Giveaway Event hosted by Rockaway Waterfront Alliance at Firehouse 59. The public can pick up their free tree if they agree to the following:

• To keep trees properly watered and maintained.
• Not to plant along streets, in containers, terraces, balconies or on roofs.

We hope you will join us at one of our workshops in creating a safer and more equitable public space /transportation corridor that would benefit the entire Rockaway community.

Rockaway Waterfront Alliance(RWA) is working with local residents, planners, and city agencies to develop a plan for  safer transportation corridor under the elevated "A line" track.

RWA is hosting in depth design and planning meetings focused  on Far Rockaway, Arverne, and Rockaway Park to bring each of the communities together to develop the sections under the elevated track to address the needs of each area. This meeting will be focused on the Far Rockaway area under the elevated track from Beach 59th St to Mott Avenue. 

We hope you will join us at one of our workshops in creating a safer and more equitable public space /transportation corridor that would benefit the entire Rockaway community.

Daffodil Bulb Giveaway

American Littoral Society Intl Coastal Clean Up

TIME: Sunday, September 28th, 10AM - 12PM

LOCATION: Beach boardwalk at Beach 59th St

Join us for the Annual Coastal Clean Up on Rockaway Beach. People of all ages are encouraged to participate. All trash collected at this event will be entered into the national database, which goes to help establish legislation to reduce trash along our shores.

Students can receive community service hours for their efforts. Students should bring any paperwork from their schools for signatures. 

Registration is not required. This event is hosted rain or shine! 


 

Community Dune Planting

TIME: Sunday, September 28th, 12 noon to 2PM
LOCATION: Firehouse 59 - 5803 Rockaway Beach Blvd, Rockaway, NY 11692

Come join RWA in creating a natural protective buffer of dunes along the east end of the Rockaways. 

As we learned from Storm Sandy, the natural vegetation and dunes that exist off our shores served as a protective buffer to the homes and businesses that exist in these areas. Join us in planting shrubs and trees native to the area at this event.

Families and people of all ages are welcome to participate in the planting. Students can receive community service hours. Registration is not required. This event is rain or shine, so please dress accordingly.

Calypso Steel Band Concert

TIME: Saturday, September 13th, 1PM-4PM
LOCATION: Beach 17th st Amphitheatre- O'Donohue Park, Far Rockaway.

Join us for a festive day off the beach with The Diamond Blade Caribbean Steel Drum Band concert hosted by Rockaway Waterfront Alliance. 

The concert will take place at O'Donohue Park- Beach 17th St outdoor amphitheatre from 1 to 4PM. Come enjoy the music and festivities.

Rockaway! Bike Tour

TIME: Sunday, August 3rd, 2014, 9:30AM Depart

DEPARTURE LOCATION: Firehouse 59 at Beach 59 St. & Rockaway Beach Blvd., Rockaway, New York.

The Rockspot Bike Tour is an interactive tour that allows participants to explore select sites of environmental and historical significance along the Rockaway Peninsula.

Join us for an exciting ride to Ft. Tilden/ Gateway National Park for the Rockaway! Exhibition being hosted by MOMA and Rockaway Artists Alliance.

We will be meeting with a guide at Ft. Tilden. The exhibition is entirely free and takes about 1.5 hrs to enjoy. To learn more about the exhibition go to:  http://momaps1.org/rockaway1

This ride is about 4 miles of flat ground but may be a challenge for many due to the heat of the summer. We have a select number of bikes that can be loaned for this tour. Queens Bike Bonanza

LOCATION: Firehouse 59 - 5803 Rockaway Beach Blvd @ Beach 59th St., Rockaway, New York.

This event is FREE to the public and includes a bike swap, learn to ride lessons for kids, free helmet give aways and activity tables for kids to make bike related crafts. Join Bike New York, Recycle A Bicycle, NYC Department of Transportation-Bike Safety, NYPD and NY Coalition for Transportation Safety to promote and educate kids about biking. RWA Performance Series: David Engel's Pirate School

Rockaway Waterfront Alliance is kicking off their Free performance series for children with David Engel's Pirate School performing at the Beach 17th St Boardwalk Amphitheater on Wednesday, June 25th

Pirate School! is a madcap, swashbuckling solo variety show created and performed by veteran New York physical comedian and actor David Engel. 

Pirate School has enthralled, emboldened and delighted thousands of families for more than 18 years with its own mischievous blend of clown theater, slapstick antics, adept magic and puppetry, zany music, rich special effects score and its signature brand of boisterous full-audience participation.

Featured in New York Magazine's "Best of New York: Kids", Pirate School consistently draws large audiences because of its undeniable, enduring theme: allowing kids to live the dream of the roving swashbuckler in a joyful, non-violent fashion.

RWA Performance Series: Little Red's Hood Puppet Show

Rockaway Waterfront Alliance is kicking off their Free performance series for school children with City Parks production of "Little Red's Hood" performing at the Beach 17th St Boardwalk Amphitheatre ( Seagirt Blvd, Far Rockaway) on Tuesday, June 24th9:45 AM 

In City Parks production of "Little Red's Hood", Little Red is a smart, young city slicker who is too focused on her smartphone to notice her surroundings. Wulfric is a misunderstood wolf with a sweet tooth. When Little Red travels from New York City to the country to deliver some cupcakes to her Grandma, she encounters a colorful cast of characters as Wulfric the Wolf tries to head her off at the pass. Come watch this original show created specifically for the PuppetMobile and find out what happens!

CityParks PuppetMobile, is one of the only traveling puppet theaters in the country; traveling the five boroughs of the city in a PuppetMobile equipped with a stage and staff of professional puppeteers, bringing entertainment to 50,000 children and families each year.

The family-friendly outdoor matinee is free for the public and Rockaway Public Schools, but space is limited so reservations are required. MAS "Jane's Walk" of Rockaway

TIME: Sunday, May 4th, 12PM - 2PM
MEET LOCATION: Firehouse 59 located at Beach 59th Street & Rockaway Beach Blvd, Rockaway, NY 

Municipal Arts Society "Jane's Walk" celebrates the enduring legacy of urban activist and intellectual Jane Jacobs by getting people out exploring our city and engaging with one another.

This year, May 4th 2014, Rockaway Waterfront Alliance will host a walking tour in the Rockaway community, exploring several amazing spaces in this beautiful, yet highly underappreciated beach community.

Our Walking Tour will be guided by Renae Diggs local resident, student of Urban Design, Urban Practitioner and Intern at Rockaway Waterfront Alliance.

The tour will depart from Firehouse 59, head over to the bay side of the peninsula on a hike through the Edgemere Landfill, visit the Arverne East Development site, stroll down the famous Rockaway Boardwalk and conclude at Firehouse 59.

The goal of this tour is to engage local residents through exploration of their urban environment, we welcome all urban enthusiasts to learn more about the Rockaways and various initiatives aimed at the improvement of one of New York's historically rich yet understated neighborhoods.

8th Annual Earth Day Rockaway

TIME: Saturday, May 3rd, 2014, 12PM - 4PM
LOCATION: Firehouse 59/ Rockaway Beach Blvd @ Beach 59th St, Rockaway, NY.

Come out and enjoy a day of fun by the Rockaway beach with free activities and programs for families and kids of all ages. This year's event will include:

Live music and food along with activities like kite-making, recycling olympics, mock dolphin rescue, plantings, composting, face painting, water testing, raptor demonstration,  firehouse safety obstacle course, and art-related booths to learn how better to appreciate and conserve the earth's resources.

Rockspot Historical Bike Tour - Fort Tilden

This tour will depart from the 59th St Firehouse and travel west for a tour of historic Fort Tilden in Gateway National Park and a short hike up to Battery Harris (viewing platform).  RWA has a select number of bikes that can be loaned for this tour. NYC Parks Tree LC Workshop

TIME: Sunday, March 30th 11am-1PM
LOCATION: Beach 64th St/ Beach Channel Drive, Rockaway, New York.

Help us to spruce up the neighborhood by planting trees along the Beach 64th st and spruce up the corridor. We will also have Tree LC workshops on tree stewardship. Adults and kids alike are welcome to participate.  If students wish to obtain community service hours, please bring your paperwork on the day of to have it signed.

Advanced registration is suggested but not required to participate.
