First Wave Initiative

is a collaborative project that engages youth, senior citizens and immigrants, in developing strategies to apply mobile technology and the youth of our community to be better prepared in the event of another storm or natural disaster.

First Wave engages young people, who are up to date on internet and cellular technology, to assist in developing communication tools that can be used to connect with vulnerable populations of senior citizens and immigrants in emergency situations.

We were encouraged by all the people who participated in the First Wave Race-to-Connect Competition in 2013 to bring people together towards one cause: To be better prepared for future emergencies.

On the day of the event, the teams registered over 500 people with the NYC OEM Notify NYC Alert System and won exciting prizes and giveaways for competing in the days activities. Congratulations to all and the many Rockaway residents who will now be better prepared for future natural disasters and emergencies!

We will posting results from our work on the First Wave Campaign by the end of the year.

RWA will continue to collect community assessment surveys in order to determine how the community accesses information and what kind of technology and equipment is most effective in preparing people of all ages for future emergencies. Click here to complete a survey.
